Halloween or not

Updated: Dec 4, 2021

Let me paint the scene, this is what we had planned for anyways....

As the children snuck down the overgrown path to our allotment, lit only by candlelight, they would be first met by a 6ft grim reaper standing at our gate. If that was not scary enough, family members were hiding around the plot making noises all around the children. Once they had worked up the courage to get past the grim reaper it's off to the polytunnel which we decorated with a hanging body wrapped in a blood-soaked bag. Gross I know, but we wanted to have a bit of fun and scare them. Last of all when they thought they had seen it all we had my sister dressed up as a clown to chase them. The plan then was to use the polytunnel as a place to sit, eat sweets and drink hot chocolate.

We could not wait, after putting all the planning in and making the statues we were really looking forwards to having a little fun on the plot.

This is the link to how we made the Body Bag.

We were weather watching all day and as you all may be aware it rained and didn't stop here in Manchester, it's what you call a wash out. When having an allotment in Manchester it's just one of them things you get used to, as it always rains here (there is a scientific reason for it, but I can't remember now).

It wasn't all a loss as we not only had a lot of fun building the Grim Reaper and the Hanging Body, but we will also get some more use out of them. I am thinking the grim reaper may stay on the plot and it might be a good way to scare the birds and cats off as well as the nosey plot holders.

We still bobbed over to the allotment to show the kids what we had done. We didn't try and scare them in the way we had planned, but it turns out that just going on to the allotment at night is scary enough for them, maybe it was for the best that we didn't get to go all out. They may have never gone back to allotment after that.

Once there and all snug in the polytunnel away from the wind and rain, we banged on the heater and the cooker to heat us all and warm up some hot chocolate.

I did make sure once we left that we did not leave the body hanging as our allotment backs on to houses and I am sure someone would think it was real. Can you imagine the news headlines? Please let us know what you guys got up to on your plot over Halloween, it would be really interesting to see how many of you guys used the night to scare your children.

If you're interested the colour in the photos was created by using colour gels on top of my flash heads, so I had to flash inside the polytunnel, one with a red gel and the over with a green one.

Once again if you're reading this, thank you for taking the time out of your day. I am not an expert; I am just sharing my experiences with you and maybe it helps in some way.
