The Holy Grail

After 5 years on the plot, a good friend of mine finally let it slip that he has lots of pallets he has to get rid of. The holy grail in allotment finds. A hopefully endless supply of timber.

The photograph above shows our first delivery of the wood he had lying around in his yard, I think 3 van loads. Just looking at it makes my mind go into over drive, all the things we can build.

The first thing that sprung to mind was to replace the fence, if you can call what was left of it a fence. By doing this we can also have the dog down more and let her off her lead. The next thing I built just because I had the wood I got excited was a new gate, reusing the old hinges after soaking them in oil.

After a few days I got a call that another load was coming. I am guessing delivery's will be once a week or when he has a van full.

Our plans are to use the big pallets to rebuild our fence first, then we will break down as much as we can so I can us the wood to make beds. With the pallet slats I am going to clad the inside of the shed and with the timber which looks like 3/2 we will be extending our hot house, as we have an old patio door that we can use.

It wasn't the easiest to break down what I am calling A frames, as they not only have nails and screws, they also have metal plates on the joints. But with the help of my little man we got through then all. I also tried to save all the plates so I can reuse them with any builds we do.

A couple of weeks later and we took another delivery. He has told me he will keep dropping wood off until I say stop, which will be like never. Some of these pallets are very large and will make a good fence.
